A closer look to separators

  • Physically insulate the positive electrode from the negative electrode in order to avoid short circuits through direct contact (mossing) or dendrite growth.
  • Store sulphuric acid in the separator pores and between the plates.
  • Keep interplate spacing.
  • Allow maximum ionic transfer via the electrolyte through the separator pores.
  • In VRLA batteries, allow the oxygen produced during the positive plate overcharge to cross the separator in order to reach the negative plate for its recombination into water.
  • Resist oxydation

Advantages of Amer-Sil separators.

The Amer-Sil separators are made out of high quality PVC and silica.

Extrusion of PVC and silica mixture is made at room temperature with an appropriate solvent (which is extracted afterwards to create additional porosity).

During this unique low temperature extrusion process (patented process), the PVC molecules are not melted but simply glued together with silica.

his results in a very hydrophilic material with extremely high porosity.

The intrinsic properties of  PVC give also very high resistance to oxidation in the aggressive medium of the electrolyte, without the addition of oil. Therefore there is no risk of ‘black scum’ issues.

The unique manufacturing process leads to a separator which improves battery performance, increases life and offer various direct and indirect opportunities to reduce the total cost.

Amer-Sil separators can be used in any industrial battery application: in traction and stationary batteries, in flooded as well as in VRLA batteries.

They are available :

  • in thickness from 0,3 to 5mm,
  • with straight or diagonal ribs, or in corrugated version
  • with various rib heights (wide variety possible)
  • in width up to 820 mm
  • in length up to 2 meters

Amer-Sorb : its formulation has been adapted to reach an extremely high porosity volume, well suited for gel stationary batteries and especially helpful in acid limited applications.
