Lead-Acid battery components

The main components of a typical lead-acid battery cell are:

  1. positive electrode/plate (flat or tubular)  : PbO2 < PbSO4
  2. negative electrode/plate (always flat) :  Pb < PbSO4
  3. microporous separator
  4. tubular gauntlets in case of tubular positive plates
  5. electrolyte (sulphuric acid) :
    • liquid : flooded batteries
    • immobilized with silica as a gel or in AGM (Absorptive Glass Mat)
  6. mud rest/prism
  7. container and lid
  8. Terminal post
  9. Acid circulation system (not always present)
  10. Automatic water filling system . (not always present)
